Kate McArthur | PRACTICE LEADER - WATER
More than a decade in various non-governmental and local government roles has given Kate excellent facilitation, communication, and negotiation skills which she applies to resolving tensions around the management of water. Kate is an excellent communicator of science and an experienced expert witness and independent hearing commissioner with a strong interest in Māori water values, resource management capacity, and education.
Kate’s career as a freshwater scientist began in 2004. She holds a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Ecology and a Master of Applied Science (Honours) in Natural Resource Management from Massey University. Kate worked for Fish and Game New Zealand and as a senior scientist for Horizons Regional Council before joining The Catalyst Group in 2012.
Kate is a mum of three who enjoys foraging, raising animals and growing stuff on her ‘micro farm’.
Kate’s areas of expertise include:
Provision of expert evidence for applicants, submitters, and councils on water quality and aquatic biodiversity
Water quality policy and plan development
Working with tangata whenua to identify and integrate mātauranga Maori into freshwater plan processes
Facilitating freshwater engagement processes
Designing and undertaking water monitoring programmes and assessments of effects
Stream education and training to build community and hapū freshwater monitoring capacity
