Richard Parkes  |  Practice Leader – Catchment Management

Richard has over 20 years of experience in implementing sustainable agriculture developed on both sides of the Tasman. Richard passionately takes a participatory approach to working with clients as he believes that for change to be enduring everyone affected by the change need to be involved or included in the process. Richard brings his inclusive and open style to all aspects of his work and has a well-developed knack for helping communities through new and complex situations, working closely with clients to learn their way through these challenges.


Richard’s farming background, decade spent lecturing in agribusiness, and years spent as an rural advisor have combined to give him a solid understanding of the on-the-ground challenges and pathways to resolving challenges, making him an asset to any project.

Outside of work Richard hangs out with his two boys; and to enable his love of food is a keen triathlete and masters swimmer. 

Richard's areas of expertise include:

  • Farm systems, sustainable agriculture, soil conservation and nutrient management 

    • Farm Planning and Farm Environment Planning (FEP)

    • Land Use Capability (LUC) Mapping  

  • Extension design, development, and implementation 

    • Education or technology transfer programmes 

    • Behaviour change  

  • Working with community and stakeholders to identify values and develop and implement action plans 

Expert evidence into consent and plan hearings on farm systems, soil conservation and natural capital approaches to land management

    • Strategic review of existing Catchment Community Group and FEP programmes and policies 

    • Development and roll-out of new Catchment Community Group and FEP programmes 

    • Catchment Plan and FEP auditing
